Friday 8th May Round Up

Eight Reed Warblers that were previously ringed at Longis have been encountered again this week, two of which were originally ringed soon after they had fledged in 2021.
A Sedge Warbler ringed on 1st May at Longis was re-encountered the following day in Northamptonshire, over 300 kilometres away!
A Water Pipit, ringed on Wednesday, was only the second to be ringed on Alderney.

MEGGA - Subalpine Warbler Caught on Longis this morning

There was an arrival of Reed and Sedge Warbler on Monday morning, providing an interesting walk around the census area after a busy ringing session.
This morning (5th May) was much quieter with wind from the northeast, or so I thought.......
Singles of both Western and Eastern Subalpine Warbler were ringed in 2016 and these were the first recorded on Alderney. Today's individual is the second record this year and now the second ringing record of Western Subalpine Warbler on Alderney.

Bird Walk 4th May

After a foggy start to the day it was a glorious Sunday afternoon for the spring walk. In Longis Baye we saw Little Egret, Shelduck, Oystercatcher and Whimbrel. On Longis reserve Blackcap and Whitethroat were singing, Meadow Pipit were singing in flight display and a male Stonechat perched in a prominent position on a bramble patch. On Longis pond a family of Coot were busy feeding.
The walk concluded with tea and coffee with a fine selection of cakes, a big thank you to the bakers!
